What Is A Message Queue?

The basic setup of a message queue is that it requires both a producer and a consumer. A producer sends a message to the message queue and a consumer connects to the queue to retrieve that message. Each message sent to the message queue remains there until the consumer is able to retrieve that message. Systems like web applications and operating systems that use message queue solutions do not require the consumer to immediately retrieve the message to continue processing others actions. In fact, email is an excellent example of how a message queue would work. The person who sends the email and the receiver of the email do not have to simultaneously interact with each other in order to communicate with one another via that email message. The message queue instead offers a means of storage for when the producer is ready to handle the message.
